Blackpool Seafront all lit up Image: And, as a Lancashire lass born and bred, no rainy October is complete without a night queuing in traffic down the Golden Mile to gaze in wonder at the shimmering Disney characters and Daleks lighting up the prom. Excitement was at fever pitch as they had never had a royal visitor before, so it was decided to decorate the prom with lights in her honour. Thousands flocked from across Lancashire for the event and to see the lights. View gallery To celebrate the centenary, Professor Vanessa Toulmin, director of the National Fairground Archive at the University of Sheffield, has spent five years in Blackpool tracing the history of the lights and has dug out hundreds of amazing pictures and heart-warming stories charting the past years. Professor Vanessa, as her friends call her, grew up in a Lancashire showland family, and her work has taken her back to her childhood years. They had 24 astronauts lighting up the prom along with 24 rockets.

Follow cathshan The option of contracting commercial scanning clinics to provide an ultrasound service to women seeking an abortion, under proposed new legislation, is being considered. However, doctors have queried how they will source the required expertise, given that there is a shortage of sonographers. He said while family planning clinics were likely to provide a termination-of-pregnancy ToP service in Dublin, elsewhere, use of private clinics was likely. He said the HSE was already struggling to recruit sonographers specialists in ultrasound to existing maternity services, and that it was difficult to see how clinics could install the same expertise by Dr Thompson said they anticipated up to a quarter of women would need to be referred for dating scans in the early days of the service, although this was likely to drop-off, as the service bedded in.
Dr Thompson said the vast majority of women know their dates, but where doubt existed, they would have to be referred for an ultrasound. He said there was concern hospitals would not be ready to provide the service in January, while others may be reluctant to take part. He said hospitals had not been asked what they needed or how they would provide the services.
Neither had advice been given on how to manage or measure conscientious objection among staff.
Follow EvelynRing Plans to routinely offer all pregnant women a scan to detect fetal abnormalities should not take years to implement, a leading obstetrician has said. October is the target date for providing full access to foetal anomaly scans, but the HSE says it will depend on funding being made available to recruit and train 52 new ultra-sonographers. In the meantime, as many as 20, expectant mothers every year may go through their pregnancy without an anomaly scan.
Fetal anomaly scans are carried out at week of a pregnancy to check on the development of a fetus and identify problems that would not show up in the early dating scan so parents and doctors can prepare properly for the birth.

Parents of Blackpool woman who died of meningitis after being diagnosed with ‘panic attack’ say they are still waiting for an apology Kathleen Davies and Alan Davies – Sarah’s mother and stepfather James Graves Published: In the space of just a week, year-old Sarah went from complaining of numb fingers at the walk-in centre in Whitegate Drive, Blackpool, to having her life support machine switched off at the Victoria Hospital.
Sarah and stepfather Alan What happened in that time is something mum Kathleen, 51, and step-dad Alan Davies say they still want details on. Her health deteriorated over the coming days, and she was put on a life support machine, which Mr and Mrs Davies made the agonising decision to turn off. An inquest concluded Sarah died of natural causes from acute pyogenic meningitis, a rapidly developing inflammation of brain and spinal tissue.
An ambulance was called but, while waiting for its arrival to her home, Sarah managed to calm herself down. After an examination, she said: Hindsight is a wonderful thing and I have learned that should I ever seen anyone presenting themselves in a similar situation I would refer to medics or pass it over the GP working with me.

A 3D ultrasound scan refers to the ultrasound capturing a 3D image of your baby. A 4D scan is the dynamic recording of your baby’s 3D ultrasound. This 4D Recording enables you to see all the different aspects of what your baby does in the womb. It is truely amazing!! We feel that realistic surface images provide a connection between parents and child that can be beneficial to the whole family.
Not so long ago, parents were not able to see or hear their baby in the womb which made for much uncertainty and longing before the big day. Now, we make it possible to not only see your baby, but also to see his or her features in amazing detail and also see your baby move whilst in the womb. Many parents have seen their baby perform somersaults on screen or watched with amusement as their baby waves at them or gets hiccups.
Wheelchair Access We do have a ramp for wheelchair access.
But Leanne has complained to the Manchester hospital as she says Harry’s stoma was placed on his hip, causing him to limp. When a boy is developing, his scrotum is split into two halves and the penis develops between these two ‘half-scrotums’. The penis starts out pointing down towards the boy’s feet, with the opening for urine quite close to the bottom. During development the penis gets bigger, straightens out and starts pointing upwards.
The urethra starts to get longer and its opening moves up the penis until it reaches its tip. As the urethra gets longer the two halves of the scrotum move together and join in the middle creating an obvious ‘join line’ called by doctors ‘the midline raphe’.

Anyone used Blackpool Victoria or Preston Hospital labour wards recently? I am wondering if anyone has had a baby at Blackpool Victoria Hospital or Preston Hospital recently and would mind sharing your experiences please? Would you recommend the care there? I have been told I can’t use the midwife let unit and will need to go to the labour ward. Our second baby is due later in the year, but we are new to the area and live in between the two hospitals so I am not sure which to go for.
I had complications during the birth of DD at another hospital so have to use the labour ward rather than the midwife led unit which is a shame as both midwife led units look fabulous from what I have seen and heard! Thanks for any info. Add message Report Tealeaf Tue Jun If I was you I’d go for Preston, purely because round here it’s common knowledge bv is a bit of a dive and a joke. I know so many people they have done more harm than good to. Preferred The Vic because of parking and facilities.
I can’t compare them like for like because the births were very different and I was out quickly the second time.

The incredible footage shows MRI scans of people kissing, among other things The incredible montage of hundreds of scans also shows a birth, people speaking and a pair of lungs breathing. It also exposes every detail of a fairly intimate moment, starting with the heart beating faster as two people kiss. According to the British Medical Journal the scenes were filmed to find out whether taking images of the male and female genitals during sex is possible.
The study also hoped to find out whether ideas about the anatomy during sex and during female sexual arousal are based on fact or assumption. The scans also show people playing musical instruments and even giving birth A BMJ boffin said: It produces detailed images through magnetic fields that map the position of water molecules, which exist at different densities in different types of tissue.

The first part of Leslie’s long and detailed story, which covers the years to , follows. See below for parts II to XI, and click here for his personal observations on an army childhood.
