Chapter 03 – Social Theories Making Sense of Abstract Theories Sociological theories are the core and underlying strength of the discipline. They guide researchers in their studies. They also guide practitioners in their intervention strategies. And they will provide you with a basic understanding of how to see the larger social picture in your own personal life. Goggles work because the best scientific components work together to magnify, enlarge, clarify, and expand to our view the thing we are studying. Theories are sets of inter-related concepts and ideas that have been scientifically tested and combined to magnify, enlarge, clarify, and expand our understanding of people, their behaviors, and their societies. Without theories, science would be a futile exercise in statistics. In the diagram below you can see the process by which a theory leads sociologist to perform a certain type of study with certain types of questions that can test the assumptions of the theory. Once the study is administered the findings and generalizations can be considered to see if they support the theory.

The new approach replaces parameter specifications of exact zeros with approximate zeros based on informative, small-variance priors. It is argued that this produces an analysis that better rejects substantive theories. The proposed Bayesian approach is particularly beneficial in applications where parameters are added to a conventional model such that a non-identified model is obtained if maximum-likelihood estimation is applied. This approach is useful for measurement aspects of latent variable modeling such as with CFA and the measurement part of SEM.
Two application areas are studied, cross-loadings and residual correlations in CFA. The approach encompasses three elements: Model testing, model estimation, and model modi cation.
The Symbolic Life Editor’s Preface The mission of the National Clearinghouse for Mental Health information is to provide effective dissemination of mental health information by all appropriate means and to all appropriate people. In carrying out its mission, the Clearinghouse attempts to remain eclectic, and thus presents information from various schools of philosophy in order to inform its audience of the diversity of thought in the mental health field.

manifest and latent functions As has been implied in earlier sections, the distinction between manifest and latent functions was devised to preclude the inadvertent confusion, often found in the sociological literature, between conscious motivations for social behavior and its objective consequences.
YMMV"I can tell you the license plate numbers of all six cars in the parking lot. I can tell you that our waitress is left-handed and the guy sitting up at the counter weighs two hundred fifteen pounds and knows how to handle himself. I know the best place to look for a gun is the cab of the gray pickup truck outside, and at this altitude, I can run flat out for a half mile before my hands start shaking.
With only a brief Sherlock Scan , he can deduce intimate and accurate information about an individual. With Hyper Awareness , they will sit down and know how many people are in the area, what they are doing, which ones are important to the plot and what would be the best exit without attracting attention. Sometimes this is an element of a character’s personality that has been well set up.
At other times, it is a new attribute that only serves the plot. It may never come up again. Compare Super Senses when it is literally that their sense of hearing, sight, smell and touch are hyperactive. Compare Spider-Sense for characters who are uncannily aware of imminent danger.
View – The Divine King"Earthly kingdoms are like the kingdom of Heaven” – Mishnah Many European cathedrals contain statues of kings sitting in state; that is, wearing a crown, and holding formal regalia – sword, sceptre, orb etc. Christ is often depicted as King in a similar way, sitting in his glory, surrounded by ranks of saints and angels. This imagery is of great antiquity. Keter is the Crown. Chesed is the right arm of authority and benevolance sceptre and Gevurah is the left arm of justice and retribution sword.

Archetypes are the building blocks of meaning, the fundamental alphabet of existence, the abstract thoughts of the divine, of which all things are but particular expressions. Why is the concept of Demiurge even necessary? Due to the dependence of reality on mind, it would seem that reality is being projected by our minds. And yet, reality continues to exist even in our absence. When we stop paying attention to something physical, it does not wink out of existence.
The lung is the master of qi. Above, it connects to the throat; below, it connects to the orifices of the heart and the liver. It is in charge of inhalation and exhalation, and, in more general terms, the flux of coming in and going out. It is situated atop the other organs, so that it can keep them in check and push the body’s waste materials downward, all the way into the large intestine. In other words, it takes in clear qi and gives off murky refuse; it absorbs the yin within taiyang to sustain the body’s yang qi [it absorbs the material essence of universal qi to sustain the body’s functions], and it commands the yang within taiyin to propel the body’s yin substances [it co[it commands the descending force to move out the waste]
In cooperation with the foot taiyin spleen network, it transports qi and provides it to all the other organs; it is for this reason that both the lung and the spleen are both called taiyin. The lung is associated with the phase element metal, the direction west, and the season of autumn. In autumn, the seasonal qi turns crisp and clear, and all living things rely on its force to become ripe and complete.
Metal is the mother of water. Lung qi, therefore, generally moves downwards. When our bodies rest, it descends into the kidney palace and combines with water, a process the Neijing refers to as ‘the mother concealing herself inside the newly conceived offspring. It is thus only appropriate that the kidney’s mother, the lung, resides at the very top of the dome that is formed by the body’s main cavity.
Rare supplicants approach the Golden Throne deep within the Imperial Palace. The rotting form of the Emperor of Mankind seated upon the Golden Throne The Golden Throne is a massive cybernetic life support mechanism utilising ancient advanced biomechanical technology dating to the Dark Age of Technology that also possesses the ability to greatly amplify psychic abilities. The Throne was modified by the Mechanicum under the direction of the Emperor of Mankind following the end of the Battle of Terra and now sustains His mortally crippled body’s life functions.
Manifest functions are the recognized and intended consequences of any social pattern, while latent functions are those unrecognized and unintended consequences.
Whether during behavioral development there is a concomitant or analogous transitional period, set apart by distinctive psychological properties and processes, has been a major issue in developmental psychology. Around this proposition and its corollaries—identification of the psychological features and transitions, their antecedents and consequents, their specificity or generality, and the mode gradual or saltatory and tenor of their development—have centered the theoretical controversies and empirical problems of the psychology of adolescence.
Disciplines, too, have developmental phases, defined by significant events. Psychology emerged as a separate discipline about and was only 22 years old when child psychology made its appearance in Germany and comparative psychology in England, and the psychology of adolescence emerged as the first branch of psychology native to the United States Hall Not until the s, however, did Hall and others, primarily his students, begin to publish a series of papers on the interests, abilities, problems, and fantasies of adolescents.
About the turn of the century Hall was working on a companion set of textbooks on childhood and adolescence. The text on adolescence actually appeared first, and with its publication the psychology of adolescence may be said to have entered adulthood. Furthermore, epitomized in the title—Adolescence: Its Psychology and Its Relations to Physiology, Anthropology, Sociology, Sex, Crime, Religion and Education —are the multidisciplinary affinities that continue to characterize the psychology of adolescence.
