This blog post is extremely heavy on the mathematical side and does not have much direct relevance to BDO gameplay. There were feedback that asked for more maths-orientated posts, so this is an experiment on how much demand there is on this type of content. Read this if you want to understand RNG. RNG is by far the most misunderstood popular concept in the history of everything. RNG is frustrating, it makes people want to ragequit. RNG is without skill, and your outcome rests solely on a dice roll. RNG is a complex issue that had been constantly misunderstood by people since the beginning of time. In fact, interpreting RNG is so hard that even scientists cannot easily explain the foundation statistical concept known as the p-value. Nevertheless, it showed me the exact angle in which this topic should be best explained. Look at these two pictures:
Ranked Matchmaking is Coming The next major update will add a ranked matchmaking feature to the game. This mode is aimed at experienced players who want to play in a more competitive environment and know their matchmaking rating MMR. Dota 2 matchmaking has always calculated MMR and used it to form matches; in ranked matchmaking we make that MMR visible. Ranked matchmaking is unlocked after approximately games. All players in the party must have unlocked the mode.
In Dota 2, being nice is % worth as it leads to significantly improved match quality and faster queue times across all medals. In both ranked and unranked games, match quality and the players you end up getting teamed up with isn’t just decided by your medal.
The journey to the historic match began in the winter of , when an OpenAI research team led by CTO Greg Brockman was searching for a challenging game environment with competitive benchmarks where it could test its AI research and techniques against the skills of human professionals. Games are a hotbed for AI research: OpenAI regards the creation of an AI that can perform as quickly and effectively as human pros in a complex computer game environment as a major step toward achieving AGI. Beating humans is also a convincing way for AI researchers to make their mark.
Developed by the Valve Corporation in , Dota 2 is a highly complex and wildly popular multiplayer online battle arena MOBA video game played between two teams of five players. It could improve its tactics only by acquiring additional expert input: How to buy items?

Since normal and ranked matchmaking are tracked separately, a player who has many normal games will still experience high uncertainty in ranked matchmaking if they have only played a few ranked games, and vice versa. Higher uncertainty leads to larger MMR adjustments after each match, and lower uncertainty leads to smaller adjustments.
Last week was the high point of the Dota 2 competitive year: Right now, one of the requirements to be a good Dota 2 player is that you’ve got to be a living, breathing human. The game does include some basic computer-controlled bots to practice against, but any seasoned player of the game should have no trouble prevailing over these bots, even on their hardest “Unfair” difficulty though the Unfair Viper bot is a legendary jerk that’s utterly miserable to play against.
Last Friday, however, we got a hint of a new, altogether more threatening kind of computer-controlled player: The OpenAI bot took on a number of professional players and it crushed them. The OpenAI bot can’t play the full game of Dota 2. It can play only one hero, Shadow Fiend, of the game’s playable characters with two more coming later this year ; it can only play against Shadow Fiend; and rather than playing in five-on-five matches, it plays a very narrow subset of the game: These aren’t random choices; 1v1 solo mid Shadow Fiend mirror matches, where two humans both play Shadow Fiend against one another, are a classic showcase of individual player ability.
Shadow Fiend is played this way for a few reasons. First, he has three skill shot magical attacks near, medium, and far Shadow Razes that put a particular emphasis on positioning and judgement to successfully land the attack or dodge it. Second, while his regular attack damage starts off very low, he has a very powerful steroid ability, called Necromastery. Each time he successfully lands the killing blow on a creep automated drone units that spawn every 30 seconds and mindlessly fight one another he captures that creep’s soul, gaining two points of bonus damage.

Valve has made some changes in the latest Dota 2 patch released last night, disabling Ranked Matchmaking for South African servers, as well as for India and Dubai. Further, Valve has announced that you will need a phone number connected to your Steam account if you wish to continue playing Ranked after 4 May Below, read the explanation by Valve regarding the changes, but first… Please note: MWEB merely provides the hardware and connectivity for the servers.
All server management is handled by Valve. At the time of writing, there is no indication when or if Ranked play on local servers will be back and we have no further information to provide. Valve did give a reason for disabling Ranked play, explaining that: We will update these servers as the unranked populations in these regions grow to the critical mass needed to be able to support splitting the user base into Ranked and Unranked queues.
While there are some players that used these servers for Ranked, the low populations made them prime targets for various Ranked Matchmaking abuses. For the time being, players in these regions will need to join Ranked Matchmaking queues in one of the other nearby supported servers. Even though SA players can still queue for Ranked play on EU servers or whichever one you prefer , you will require a valid phone number attached to your Steam account.
Therefore, you will have until 4 May to add a phone number, after which point you will not be able to queue for Ranked until you add one. Having more players using their primary accounts will have a positive effect on both Ranked and Unranked Matchmaking. There will be a two-week grace period from today during which players have time to register a number, but starting on May 4th, accounts without a registered number will no longer be eligible for Ranked play.
In part 2, we will discuss some other effects and weaknesses of such a system. Before we really begin talking about inflation at the highest level of play, we need to look at what it really means for a player to have a MMR of 4. The most comprehensive analysis of what it really means to have a certain MMR comes from this reddit post.
This graph is the end result. However, there are several problems with this system. Firstly, it is currently unknown to us as to whether this ratio changes from patch to patch.
Dota 2 matchmaking has always calculated MMR and used it to form matches; in ranked matchmaking we make that MMR visible. Here’s what you need to know about ranked matchmaking: Ranked matchmaking is unlocked after approximately games.
Comments Shares It started, strangely, with the unlikely combination of a Hindu goddess and Monopoly. In , Blizzard was flying high on the success of Warcraft and Warcraft 2. After years of small-time Super Nintendo games, they were suddenly big league. But there was one thing Warcaft 2 was missing: PC gamers, as always, were finding creative solutions to even the most challenging technical problems.
I think it was games of Monopoly you could play over Westwood Chat at the time. We thought, ‘God, how cool would it be if we could create a network that was deeply integrated with our products such that people could connect up, play, it would be one click of a button, and they’d be online, able to communicate, chat, play with their friends? Check out our history of every Blizzard PC game. And then Blizzard came up with the twist: Well, more like the idea of Battle.
It’s a little hard to believe how humble the origins of Battle.

This explanation is current as of the patch going out late in the week of Sept 15th wed, thurs or fri Summary: The system guesses how good you are based on who you beat and who you lose to. It knows pre-made teams are an advantage, so it gives you tougher opponents when you are in a pre-made team. We did fancy math to make the pre-made teams vs solo players matching fair.
Sep 15, · We want people to easily play with their friends because they will have more fun if they do, and you can t have a 5v5 matchmaking pool of all 2 man teams, or all 3 man teams you need a mixture for it to work.
December 01 I would like to share my experience and talk about the struggles as a DotA 2 pro in regards to getting better, finding a team, practice, and income. Think of it as a guide to becoming a DotA 2 pro. Perhaps it is still too soon for me, a new pro to be posting such a thing, but not many pros have shed light on many topics, and I think this will help the people trying to pursue gaming.
It’s nearly pointless to scrim unless your individual skill is near the same level as a tier 2 team 3DMAX, etc. What separates pro teams to random teams isn’t just the individual skill, the understanding of line ups, and the flow of the game is completely different. Playing seriously with a low level team may harm your understanding and is very inefficient.
The only benefit of playing for a low level team is learning to deal with your teammates in losing games which is important I guess. But generally low-end teams take the game less seriously so learning how to deal with these teammates may be completely different than dealing with high skilled players. Anyway the point is: Now how do you get better, well first off, if you don’t have the time don’t even bother.
Finding pub games is probably the single most important thing.
